5 Bargain Craft Beers So You Still Have Money For Fireworks

Oh say, can you see that beer over there and pass it to me? It’s July! And there’s no better time to feel that interesting mix of patriotic, politically indignant and with the craving to blow things up.  Since fireworks are expensive, however, some strategic budgeting should come into play.

Does it mean that an inexpensive craft beer should be considered less worthy? Ye must be the town drunk! This is the land of the free, damn it. A fair price doesn’t mean your palate has to fail like fizzled fireworks.

So, with that said, here are five brews cheap enough for you to proudly say “I love America and decent, well-priced beer and bad dog, drop the rest of my burger!”

Pike IPA
American India Pale Ale
Pike Brewing Co., Seattle, WA
6.5% ABV
$4.99 at Total Wine

Simple goodness. Fresh, herbal aroma and a fruity, very balanced hop taste with a body light enough for summer, and a well-timed finish that pulls you in for the next gulp.

Arrogant Bastard
American Strong Ale
Stone Brewing Co., Escondido, CA
7.2% ABV
$5.49 at Sunset Corners

It’s true what you’ve heard; It’s a bold, in-your-face, aggressive journey into a dark hop world, and you either love it or hate it. At first. Then all of a sudden you start having dreams about a gargoyle whispering in your ear,“love it, LOVE IT”. Then you do. And the beast is satisfied.

(pictured is the double bastard, which I’ll change soon, but that definitely is an acceptable substitute)

Black Marlin
English Porter
Ballast Point Brewing Co., San Diego, CA
6% ABV
$5.59 at Sunset Corners

Sweet bread aroma gives way to a toasty malt flavor, yet light bodied and drinkable.

Hop Rod Rye
American India Pale Ale
Bear Republic Brewing Co., Healdsburg, CA
8% ABV
$4.99 at Total Wine

Caramel malts and a smooth body are balanced with a hop zing and a tang only rye can provide.

Hop Stoopid
American Double / Imperial IPA
Lagunitas Brewing Co., Petaluma, CA
8% ABV
$5.49 at Total Wine

A hop blast to keep you awake in a post-burger-heat-wave daze.
